Descrizione

The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona reference 6239 was first introduced in 1963 and is regarded as the first reference in what would later become the legendary Daytona collection. It marked an important milestone in the history of Rolex chronographs and is today highly sought after by collectors worldwide. Particularly rare dial variations, including the so-called “Paul Newman” dials, command significant collector premiums due to their rarity and distinctive design.

The reference 6239 features an approximately 37 mm stainless steel case, classic pump pushers, and an external stainless steel tachymeter bezel. The relocation of the tachymeter scale to the bezel distinguished the 6239 from earlier Rolex chronographs and played a defining role in the design language of subsequent Daytona generations. Inside is a manually wound chronograph movement based on the Valjoux 72, modified accordingly by Rolex.

Prices for Rolex Daytona reference 6239 watches can vary considerably. Key factors include the overall condition of the watch, the originality of the dial, hands, bezel and case, the specific dial variation, as well as the available provenance. The presence of the original box, papers and a traceable history can further enhance its collector value.

The present example features a classic dial configuration of the reference 6239.

The terms “Double Swiss” and “Solo” refer to very specific and rare early dial variations of the reference 6239. A “Double Swiss” dial is distinguished by the presence of two “SWISS” signatures at the lower edge of the dial and is found particularly on very early examples. On a so-called “Solo” dial, by contrast, the lettering beneath the Rolex coronet is greatly reduced and essentially limited to the Rolex signature. Due to their rarity, authentic examples of these variations can command substantial premiums.

Even without such a special dial variation, the Rolex Daytona reference 6239 ranks among the most important vintage chronographs ever produced by Rolex. As the first reference of the Cosmograph Daytona family, it holds considerable historical significance and is particularly sought after when preserved in original and well-maintained condition. When assessing a specific example, the interaction between originality, condition, reference and serial number, as well as the correct period configuration, is therefore more important than any single rare dial designation.
