Description

Why Invest in En-Primeur Wine?

This is the first en primeur investment of the year on the platform. With en primeur (futures) wines, you invest in new wine that has not yet been bottled. However, en primeur wine is traded in bottles, not barrels. Buying en primeur wine for investment purposes is similar to the futures market: the wine is purchased before it has matured, as the buyer has a price expectation for the wine in the future.

Why Invest in Wine from Lafite?

Prestigious Reputation and Historical Significance
Château Lafite Rothschild, a renowned wine estate in the Pauillac region of the Médoc, is celebrated for producing some of the most sought-after and expensive red wines globally. Known for its perfume, elegance, finesse, and harmony, Château Lafite Rothschild stands out in contrast to the more powerful Latour and Mouton Rothschild wines. Exceptional vintages can age for 50 years or more, highlighting the longevity and investment potential of these wines.

Unique and Quality-Driven Winemaking Process
The precise blend of the grand vin varies by vintage, typically containing 80-95% Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot making up much of the rest. In the winery, each plot of grapes is fermented separately to preserve their unique terroir and ensure maximum control during blending. The wine is aged for up to 20 months in new oak barrels, enhancing its quality and complexity.

High-Quality Second Wine
Carruades de Lafite, the estate's second wine, has garnered a strong following of its own. This blend includes more Merlot (30-50%) and is aged for 18-20 months, with 80% in barrels and 20% in tanks. This meticulous process ensures a high-quality wine that complements the grand vin while offering a distinct profile.

Prime Vineyard Location and Composition
The Lafite Rothschild vineyard spans approximately 112 hectares (277 acres) of sunny, well-drained sites with fine gravel and sand over limestone subsoil. The vineyard is divided into three parts: the hillsides around the château provide core material for the grand vin, while the adjacent Carruades plateau contributes to the second wine. Additionally, a 4.5-hectare plot in Saint-Estèphe is included in its Pauillac-classified wines, adding to the vineyard's unique composition.

Diverse Vineyard Plantings
Around 70% of the vineyards are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% with Merlot, 3% with Cabernet Franc, and 2% with Petit Verdot. The average age of the vines is 40 years, contributing to the depth and complexity of the wines produced.

Esteemed Ownership and Management
The neighboring property Duhart-Milon shares ownership and management with Lafite. The estate is part of Domaines Barons de Rothschild, which also owns other prestigious properties like Château Rieussec in Sauternes and Château L'Évangile in Pomerol. This extensive portfolio underscores the expertise and prestige associated with Lafite Rothschild.

Rich Historical Legacy
Château Lafite Rothschild's reputation dates back to the late 17th Century when Jacques de Ségur established the vineyard. By the 18th century, it earned the title "The King's Wine" at Versailles, and in 1787, American Founding Father Thomas Jefferson recognized its excellence. Jefferson's passion for Lafite's wines led to significant orders, and today, bottles from that era fetch astronomical prices at auction.

Investment-Worthy Heritage
Purchased by Baron James de Rothschild in 1868, the estate has remained in the Rothschild family, becoming more consistent and reliable since the mid-1990s. With a history of producing sublime wines and regularly being recognized as wine of the vintage, Château Lafite Rothschild offers a compelling case for investment, combining historical significance, exceptional quality, and strong market demand.
