Description
The Port Ellen distillery closed in 1983 and has since garnered a cult following who, no doubt, are overjoyed by the news that Port Ellen will soon be coming back online.
From 2001 until 2017, Port Ellen fans were sustained by yearly releases of aged Port Ellen stocks, known as the Port Ellen Special Releases. The whiskies are all between 22 and 37 years old, with vintages from the 1970s. As the series progressed the number of bottles in each release declined. For example, the 2nd release consisted of 12,000 bottles, whilst the 16th release (the least common) consists of only 2,940 bottles.
The series ended in 2017 after Diageo announced that expressions from Port Ellen would no longer be included in the annual releases.
