Who is Salvador Dali?
Salvador Dalí: A Surrealist Icon
Salvador Dalí, born in Figueres, Spain, in 1904 is one of the most popular artists of the 20th century and his work is exemplary for Surrealist art. His paintings, sculptures and works on paper adorn the most prestigious museums around the world including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, The National Gallery in Washington DC and the Tate Modern in London. Dalí’s creations shaped art history and were often inspired by his most important muse, his wife Gala, whose name features in many of his signatures.

Coherent yet truly unique are each of his artworks and especially the finely executed masterpieces enjoy a lastingly stable position in the art market. Although one of the most recognizable artists of our times, the Dalí market remains more accessible when compared with other top-level artists. In the last two decades, the total turnover of all artworks sold at auction by the artist reached almost USD 400 million of which a fourth were paid for works on paper such as collages, drawings and watercolors, a remarkable percentage in comparison to other high-ranking artists.

Why "The Mill Tower":
This work is new to the market
The artwork is new to the market, and since leaving the artist's studio, it remained in the same private collection until Spectrum Utilis acquired it with Artemundi as the advisor. It is not only “fresh” to the market but equally newly available to academia, leaving space for the artwork to be studied by researchers as well as the market and the general public.

Comparable artworks consistently increased in prices in the last two decades at an average price considerably above the release price, potentially allowing for a significant margin. The present artwork belongs to a group that regularly outperforms the index of all of Dalí’s artworks sold at auction, making it an interesting investment opportunity.

Dalí's 1977 Creation: A Surreal Perspective on Seagull Heads and Towers
Six intertwined heads of seagulls in profile prominently occupy the greatest part of the foreground of this 1977 creation by Salvador Dalí. Placed against a backdrop of a painted brick tower, the seagulls’ heads repetitive arrangement mirrors the towering structure with the birds’ peaks echoing ascending ladder steps or different floor levels. The suggested brick pattern in the feathers of some of the seagulls confirms the swirling animal fusion actually to be a steady and rigid entity of considerable weight, which makes the floor bend below. Conceived as a draft for a three-dimensional work of architecture a mill tower in fact, or a study for a sculpture, the artist included its signature crutch on the upper right where it is placed on top of one bird’s peak to support another peak, consciously breaking with perspective.

3-dimensional masterpiece - hidden treasure
The artist’s great interest in optical illusion was further confirmed during a recent conservation procedure: glued to the back of the artwork was a promotional article about Polaroid’s advances in 3-D cameras. Dalí, who in the 1960’s himself featured in a Polaroid advertisement, must have attached the article to underline the three-dimensional intentions of his project. This discovery does not only allow for a better interpretation of the collage itself, but it also transforms this particular artwork into a quintessential proof of Dalí’s artistic process making it an important work for the study of his entire oeuvre.
