Description

Keith Haring gained prominence in the art scene of 1980s New York, particularly within the East Village. Alongside artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kenny Scharf, and Jenny Holzer, he became a prominent figure. Haring effectively bridged the gap between the art world and the street culture by initially creating graffiti on city subways and sidewalks before transitioning to a studio practice. He fused the widespread appeal of cartoons with the raw energy seen in Art Brut artists like Jean DuBuffet. This unique combination led to a distinct pop-graffiti aesthetic characterized by vibrant, boldly outlined figures against solid or patterned backgrounds.

Haring tackled significant themes in his work, including exploitation, subjugation, drug abuse, and the looming threat of nuclear holocaust. With great boldness, he actively addressed social issues, particularly after being diagnosed with AIDS in 1987. Today, Haring's artwork commands high prices, often reaching seven figures at auctions. His work has been featured in solo exhibitions at prestigious institutions such as the Brooklyn Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Albertina Museum in Vienna, among others.

Pop Shop I, the first piece in Haring's iconic Pop Shop series, exemplifies his creative genius in both form and subject matter. With his signature dancing figures, energetic lines, and an underlying sense of community and pride, the artwork represents the culmination of Haring's artistic practice, driven by his belief in art's accessibility to all.

Created in 1987, a year after Haring opened his first Pop Shop in downtown Manhattan, Pop Shop I aimed to appeal to both children and collectors. The Pop Shops served as spaces where Haring could sell his art for as little as 50 cents, offering items such as t-shirts, badges, and magnets featuring his now widely recognized designs.

What is an artist's print?

An artist's print, also known as an artist's proof or an AP, is a limited edition print of an artwork created by the artist themselves. It is typically produced using various printmaking techniques such as lithography, etching, screen printing, or woodcut. Artist's prints are considered original works of art and are often signed and numbered by the artist.

The purpose of creating artist's prints is to make the artwork more accessible to a larger audience, as they are usually produced in limited quantities. The edition size is determined by the artist, and each print within the edition is considered to be of equal quality and value. Artist's prints may differ from regular reproductions or posters because they are produced under the direct supervision and involvement of the artist, ensuring a higher level of authenticity and artistic integrity.
