Description
The Macallan distillery is one of the oldest and most renowned whiskey distilleries in Scotland. The history of the distillery goes back to 1824 with the foundation by Alexander Reid.
The bottles and casks from the distillery are extremely popular among collectors and connoisseurs. For this reason, the products of the distillery regularly reach record prices at auctions. For example, a cask of the distillery from 1988 was sold in 2022 for almost $1.3 million. Further, a bottle of Macallan whisky from 1926 sold for just under $1.5 million in 2018.
But American, Irish, and international whiskies are also showing up in significant collections with increasing frequency. According to Knight Frank's Wealth Report 2020, the value of rare whisky has increased 564% in the last decade. The global whisky market was valued at $61.7 billion in 2019 and is expected to reach $95.9 billion by 2026. Rare whisky is by far the top performer among luxury goods while not being directly tied to stock market conditions. While stocks can experience a sharp price correction, whisky generally always gains in value over time. However, this is not guaranteed with every bottle of whisky.
