Description
The Patek Philippe Nautilus was designed by the famous designer Gerald Genta and introduced in 1976. The model's name is inspired by Captain Nemo's ship from the book 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The watch is made of stainless steel and represents a radical departure from Patek's traditional precious metal designs. It kicked off the luxury sports watch trend, which is still very popular today. Although the Nautilus is available in a variety of sizes, dial colours and case materials, it is easily recognisable by its rounded octagonal bezel, integrated bracelet and symmetrical "ears". These serve both as a hinge for the case and as protection for the crown.
In 1981, the Nautilus was launched in a midsize size, which is very exciting for collectors today. The model has a diameter of only 37.5 millimetres. In 1982, the reference 3800 was introduced and was available in a much wider range of case, dial and hand configurations than the other two models. In fact, it was initially even more expensive than the famous Reference 3700. The reason for this could be that the Reference 3800/1A was powered for the first time by the in-house developed Calibre 335 SC. This line became the new centrepiece of the Nautilus collection and can be recognised by the new central second hand. This makes the watch more interesting for men and collectors with narrower wrists.
