Description

David Hockney is a British artist born in 1937 whose works have been offered 11,843 times at public auctions, mainly in the category of printmaking multiples. His earliest work listed on artprice.com is "Le Nid de duc", sold at Christie's (Aquarell Drawing) in 1983, while the most recent is The Dramatists Guild Fund in Association with Circle Repertory Company - Young Playwrights Festival, Pulcinella with Applause, sold in 2023 (Printmaking Multiple). He is ranked 14th among the world's best-selling artists at auctions (in terms of sales in 2022). His works are mainly offered in the United States. Hockney has collaborated with Allen Jones and other artists.

In 2010, renowned artist David Hockney visited Yosemite National Park with a brand new Apple invention: the iPad. He was one of the first to recognise the potential of the device as an artistic tool, and used it to create the 26-piece Yosemite Suite while in the park. This demonstrated Hockney's status as an artist of the modern age and established a unique, pioneering aesthetic in the Yosemite Valley. Since the mid-19th century, Yosemite has been a popular destination for artists and has inspired many renowned works, including Albert Bierstadt's Merced River, Yosemite Valley and Ansel Adams' widely-recognised photographs.

David Hockney's Yosemite drawings are a modern take on the iconic landscape, created using digital brushstrokes and his signature colorful palette. He used the Brushes app to draw in situ and experiment with different types of mark-making, such as blurring and line density, to create layered images with depth and atmosphere. One of the few works in the series that references human life, Untitled No. 1 features abstracted figures in the foreground, dwarfed by the immense rock face in the background to highlight the size of the national park. Hockney was inspired to experiment with transferring his iPad drawings to large-format prints of almost one by two thirds of a metre, four times larger than the iPad screen they were produced on. These vibrant prints are an example of his early experimentation with digital art.
