Description
In the 1970s, the renowned wine families around Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild decided to create one of the best Californian wines with Bordeaux style in a joint venture. This idea gave birth to the first Opus One with the 1979 vintage.
Only a few years ago, in addition to Opus One, the multivintage wine Overture was marketed, which has been vinified since 1993. Opus One does not release the rare magnum bottles until two years after the normal bottle size, these are then much rarer and more sought after. It wasn't until 2021 that the highly rated 2016 was released in the magnum bottle.
Due to the fires in the Napa Valley region in 2020 and the grapes damaged as a result, it is unlikely that this vintage will be marketed, according to Charlie Matthews, the winery's European representative. And if it does, only in very small quantities. This would mean an unprecedented shortage of the wine.
