The Origin Story of the Birkin Bag 
The design idea for the Birkin Bag emerged during a flight in 1983. Louis Dumas, the former head of the family-owned company Hermès, encountered British actress Jane Birkin while traveling. She was using a straw bag as a handbag. When asked why she used a bag made of bast, the actress replied that conventional handbags were simply too small.
