The Kelly Bag, is an iconic handbag designed by the French luxury brand Hermès in 1935 and released under the name Sac-à-Depêche. It was later renamed after the American actress and Princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly, who was often seen carrying the bag in the 1950s. According to legend, Grace Kelly used the bag to conceal her pregnancy from the paparazzi and the public eye, which only added to its mystique and allure. Since then, the Kelly bag has become one of the most recognizable and sought-after luxury handbags in the world, known for its timeless style, quality craftsmanship, and unmistakable elegance. 
 
The most expensive handbag ever sold in auction history was a Kelly: an exceptional, matte white Himalaya Niloticus Crocodile Diamond Retourné Kelly 35 with 18k white gold and diamond hardware. The auction was in 2021 at Christie's in Hong Kong. 
 
Today, the Kelly bag is available in a range of sizes and materials, including leather, crocodile, and ostrich, and continues to be one of the most popular and enduring symbols of luxury fashion. 
 
Hermes are known for their strict purchasing policies, which can limit the number of bags that an individual can purchase each year, if they can even purhcase. The producer determines who is allowed to purchase one of the coveted handbags in the first place. Production is deliberately limited. Similar to a Rolex watch, buyers have to put up with waiting periods of several years. To avoid these waiting periods, customers switch to the secondary market. Even bags with signs of wear after several years of use still fetch prices of over 10,000 euros. This underlines the enormous scarcity and high demand.
