Richard Paterson was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1949. His father, a master blender himself, instilled a deep appreciation for the craft in his son from a young age.

Paterson began his journey in the whisky world spending time in his family’s blending house, learning everything from cask management to the nuances of maturation. By the age of 17, he had officially joined A. Giles & Co. as a production assistant, where he began honing his sense of smell - a talent that would later define his career.

Paterson went on to train formally, undertaking an intensive apprenticeship at a distillery. He absorbed every detail of the process, from distillation to bottling, and rigorously developed his olfactory abilities. As his skills grew, so did his reputation.

Shaping Dalmore and Beyond

While Richard Paterson has worked with several distilleries throughout his career, he is most closely associated with The Dalmore, a Scottish Highlands distillery.

Paterson joined The Dalmore in 1972 when he was 23. By 26, he was Dalmore’s master blender. He quickly transformed The Dalmore’s range by introducing innovative ageing techniques, such as maturing whisky in casks previously used for rare Spanish sherries, which imbued Dalmore whiskey with complex and unique flavours.

One of his signature achievements at Dalmore is the 62-year-old single malt, a rare bottling that sold for over £125,000 at auction. With only 12 bottles created, this whisky became a testament to both Paterson’s expertise and the value he brings to whisky ageing.

Paterson has also been behind other sought-after creations, such as the Dalmore Constellation Collection, a series of rare, single-cask vintages. These whiskies represent some of the finest expressions of The Dalmore and highlight Paterson’s philosophy that great whisky must be crafted with patience, artistry, and meticulous attention to detail.

His work with Dalmore has promoted the brand to a revered status among collectors and connoisseurs, making it one of the world’s most prestigious whisky brands and a sought-after name in the whisky investment sphere.

Recognition and the OBE

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the whisky industry, Richard Paterson was awarded the title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2021.

This prestigious honour celebrates his dedication to advancing the art of whisky-making and his impact on the global spirits industry. The OBE is a fitting tribute to a man who has spent his life in service to whisky, tirelessly promoting its history, culture, and enjoyment.

Beyond his formal accolades, Paterson is also highly respected by his peers and celebrated by whisky enthusiasts worldwide. Known for his charisma and humour, he often speaks at the biggest industry events, sharing his knowledge and passion for whisky.

His enthusiasm has helped make whisky more accessible and appealing to new generations, solidifying his status as an ambassador for the spirit.

Why "The Nose"?

Paterson has worked hard for his famous nickname, “The Nose.” It refers to his remarkable olfactory abilities which have become legendary in the industry. It’s one of the reasons why he was a master blender at the age of just 26.

Whisky blending and tasting require a highly refined sense of smell and taste, but Paterson’s abilities go above and beyond. He has stated that he can distinguish over 3,000 unique scents, a skill he’s cultivated through years of dedicated practice and sensory training. A skill that has earned him his iconic nickname.

Peterson’s tasting rituals are legendary. He performs a sensory “warm-up” before each tasting session, often holding a sample to his nose to take in its aroma before sipping.

He emphasises not only sniffing but also the importance of paying attention to the mouthfeel, flavour, and finish. Elements that all contribute to the whisky's character. Peterson believes that only by engaging all the senses can you fully experience the essence of whisky.

His dedication to scent and flavour has led to his selection of some of the rarest, most sought-after casks and blends. He is known to spend years, even decades, ensuring that each batch meets his high standards before it reaches consumers.

Paterson’s reputation for precision has led many whisky enthusiasts and investors to view his choices as benchmarks of quality. If you’re new to whisky investing, searching for whiskies with Paterson’s mark of approval is a great way to start.
