Which Alternative Assets Are the Most Liquid?

Liquidity — how quickly an asset can be sold at or near its estimated value — is one of the most important factors for an alternative asset investor to understand before buying.

How liquid is each alternative asset category?

  • Watches. Popular brands and reference numbers (such as widely traded Rolex and Patek Philippe models) trade frequently on active resale platforms, making watches one of the more liquid categories.
  • Trading cards. Graded cards for well-known athletes or characters trade often, with frequent auction and marketplace activity providing regular price data.
  • Wine. Established producers and vintages with strong critic scores trade reasonably often through wine exchanges and merchants; lesser-known producers trade far less frequently.
  • Whisky. Bottled releases from recognized distilleries trade at auction with some regularity; whisky casks are less liquid, since selling a cask typically requires finding a bottler or another investor rather than a retail buyer.
  • Jewelry. Branded pieces with strong resale demand (from recognized maisons) trade reasonably well; unbranded or bespoke pieces are harder to price and sell quickly.
  • Collectibles (LEGO, sneakers, memorabilia). Liquidity depends heavily on the specific item's popularity; iconic, widely recognized pieces sell faster than niche items.
  • Art and classic cars. These tend to be the least liquid of the categories compared here. Selling typically requires finding a specific buyer or auction slot, and the process can take months.

Why does liquidity vary so much within a single category?

Liquidity depends on buyer depth (how many people want that specific item), transaction frequency (how often similar items actually trade), and price transparency (how easy it is to find a fair, comparable price). A common item in a liquid category can still be hard to sell if there's no active market for that exact variant, while a rare item in a typically illiquid category can sell quickly if demand is strong enough.

What does this mean for an investor?

Investors should treat published liquidity rankings as a general guide, not a guarantee for any specific item. Splint Invest evaluates the expected liquidity of each individual asset, not just its broad category, before offering it to investors.

Are all watches equally liquid?

No. Widely recognized models from major brands are far more liquid than obscure references or brands with limited resale demand.

Is a whisky cask as liquid as a bottled whisky?

No. A bottled whisky can often be sold at auction to a broad pool of collectors, while a cask typically needs a buyer with the means to bottle or store it, which narrows the pool of potential buyers.
