🚀October 2024: Performance Update
As October wraps up, we’re pleased to present a fresh look at how Splint Invest’s alternative assets performed over the month. While some asset categories saw temporary slowdowns due to seasonal patterns, others held steady and even demonstrated robust growth. This monthly update provides insights into the pricing rationale for key assets, highlighting both high performers and emerging investment opportunities.
🌟 Top Performers: Pokémon Cards, Sports Trading Cards, and Sneakers
Demand remains high for Pokémon cards, sports trading cards, and collectible sneakers, underscoring their resilience in the market. Shohei Ohtani’s trading cards, after a stellar month, saw an increase of +1.7%, though Patrick Mahomes outpaced him with a 3.5% rise in value on our Immaculate Collection card. In sneakers, the Loro Piana x New Balance model led with a gain of 4.5%. These segments have benefitted from strong secondary market activity and record-breaking auction results, making them attractive for investors seeking steady growth.
Insight into Patrick Mahomes' Immaculate Collection Card:
This card’s valuation reflects both current market activity (50%) and the performance of Mahomes’ CardLadder index (50%), which has surged by 26% since the card’s release. This dual metric approach translates to an impressive weighted return of 13%, conservatively marking up our card by 9.9% to date.
🎨 Art Market: Emerging Artists Fuel Growth
Emerging artists Móyòsóré Martins and Britt Boutros-Ghali each saw gallery price increases of 10% this month, driven by high demand and a growing collector base. Similarly, the recent representation of Choi Myoung Young by prestigious galleries Almine Rech and Page has resulted in a 15% boost in his artwork prices. Consequently, we adjusted prices up by a conservative 5%.
Other noteworthy performances in the art sector included the debut of Fika Leon’s new release, up 10% due to a favorable gallery discount, and an impressive 9.3% increase for works by Jannis Kounellis, reflecting the revived interest in the Arte Povera movement.
⌚ Watches and 🍷 Wine: Signs of Stabilization
The luxury watch sector continues to diverge. Vintage, rare watches such as the Rolex Daytona 6239 managed a modest 1.8% increase, showing stability, while prices of standard models remain under pressure. Encouragingly, some standard watches are beginning to see slight upticks, potentially indicating a market bottom.
In the wine sector, demand has been mixed. Although October generally sees an uptick in interest, this year’s increases have been modest, with only select wines seeing price gains. Liv-Ex reported a 1.9% increase in our Screaming Eagle 2018 release, hinting at stabilizing demand.
🥃 Whisky and Rum: Steady Gains Ahead of Holiday Season
Following September’s stable performance, whisky prices remained firm in October. The Macallan 18 Year Old Vertical Collection led this month with a 3.2% gain, bolstered by holiday-season demand for premium bottles. Whisky casks also maintained their value, with a steady 0.7% increase across our portfolio.
💎 Precious Metals and Diamonds: Contrasting Trends
Precious metals maintained their upward trajectory, adding 2.9% in October, extending gains from a strong September. In contrast, diamonds slipped by 1.5%, influenced by weakening luxury demand and geopolitical conflicts. Colored stones, however, countered some of the losses, increasing by up to 4.5%, demonstrating their resilience within the gemstone portfolio.
🚗 Cars and LEGO: Mixed Activity as Holidays Approach
In classic cars, the recently added TVR Tuscan appreciated by 2.1% this month, benefiting from its excellent condition and an advantageous purchase price. LEGO sets saw a varied performance, with certain Christmas-themed collections like Star Wars rising in value, while others dipped slightly.
